Description
The Magna Carta 1215 (Latin for 'Great Charter') passed into law in 1225 required King John of England to accept that his will was not arbitrary and that no free man could be punished unless it was under the rule of law.The Magna Carta was directly influenced by the Charter of Liberties in 1100, in which King Henry I had limited his powers in certain areas. By the 19th century, almost all of its original clauses were repealed. The Magna Carta is now generally considered to be the basis or a part of the Constitution, rather than the sole document forming the Constitution. The Magna Carta was also important in the colonisation of America, as England's legal system was used as a foundation by its colonies. It influenced New England settlers and inspired the United States Constitution, which is also included in this document, as is the Bill of Rights.
